Your Amazon Traffic Dropped, But Your Sales Didn't? Here's Why

2 Min Read | october, 2026 | BY Benjamin Weyrich

Did you know a brand can lose 30% of its Amazon traffic year over year and still sell more units in that same period? It sounds impossible until you understand what Amazon actually counts as "traffic."

Amazon's search engine got a major upgrade, and it is now changing what a healthy dashboard looks like.

The Number You're Panicking Over Isn't What You Think It Is

For vendors, "traffic" on Amazon really means glance views, one count every time a shopper opens a product page. If a shopper used to click three listings before buying the right one, that single purchase generated three glance views.

Now imagine Amazon's algorithm gets smart enough to show that shopper the right product first. Same sale, same shopper, but now it only takes one glance view instead of three. Your traffic number just fell by two-thirds, and nothing about your business got worse.

Why This Is Happening Now

Amazon's search used to rank listings mostly by keyword match, so a gamer and an office manager searching "laptop keyboard" saw nearly the same results. Amazon's newer system, called COSMO, reads shopper intent instead of just words.

It looks at who is searching, not only what they typed, and serves each person the product most likely to be the right one on the first click. Fewer clicks per sale means fewer glance views, which is the traffic drop showing up in dashboards across the board this year.

What We Found Across Our Client Portfolio

We compared traffic, conversion rate, and units sold across Q1 of 2024, 2025, and 2026 for our full book of Amazon clients. Roughly 8 in 10 accounts showed the same pattern, regardless of category, price point, or brand size: conversion rate climbed steadily, then jumped sharply into 2026, while traffic fell. Units sold held or grew the whole time.

A falling traffic chart on its own tells you almost nothing. Before you touch your content budget or your media spend, pull three numbers for the same period: glance views, conversion rate, and units sold. If conversion rate rose enough to offset the traffic drop, your funnel got healthier, not weaker. If sales fell right alongside traffic, that's a real problem worth digging into, and the cause is rarely the algorithm.

Get the Full Picture Before It's Too Late

Amazon rewards listings that answer the actual intent behind a search: what a product is for, who it's for, and what problem it solves, not just how many keywords it packs in. Getting that right across an entire catalog, not just your top sellers, is what separates brands riding this change to growth from brands still fighting the wrong fire.

Our whitepaper breaks down exactly how Amazon's algorithm changed, the full data pattern across our client base, and a five-point checklist to run before you blame your content or your media team for a traffic number that might actually be good news.
